The Essential Differences between Light and Heavy Steel Structures

There are no consentaneous standards to distinguish light steel structures from heavy steel structures, and many buildings today are designed with both light and heavy structures. The basic factors that can be considered coherently are listed as follows:

1. Tonnage of the crane inside the steel structures: Heavy≥25Tons﹥Light
2. Quantity of steel used per square meter: Heavy≥50kg/m2﹥Light
3. Thickiness of the steel plates on structural parts: Heavy≥100mm﹥Light
4. Specially used fields: Petrochemistry workshops, power plant workshops, large span stadiums, exhibition centers, high-rise or beyond high-rise structures must be heavy steel structures. Light type roofs, light type exterior walls, light type maintenance and normal steel workshops are usually light steel structures.
5. Previous data referred: Costs per square of heavy steel structures are higher than light steeel structures. The max part weight of heavy steel structure is higher. Max span distance, structure type, eaves height are also important data to distinguish light steel structures from heavy steel structures. 

In fact, it is not the weight of the total structure that decides the type of the structure, that it is the weight of the maintenance the structure bears. The idea of deisgn is just the same, no matter light or heavy structure.
